Enamel lapel pin badge, metal, with a golden chain connecting a cloud and an air balloon.

What is better than a cool pin? Two! Especially if you can divide them between the two sides of your shirt lapel. Thanks to POPpins our dream has come true once again. They recreated one of the most beloved paintings of the Hungarian National Gallery in metal and enamel and made sure that this balloony lapel pin possesses all the joy and playfulness we love the original painting so much for.

Inspired by Pál Szinyei Merse: Balloon made by POPpins.

Exhibition: Canvas and Cult. The Art of Pál Szinyei Merse (1845-1920) 12 November 2021 - 13 February 2022, Hungarian National Gallery

Deliberately opposed to the public tastes worshiping traditions blindly, Szinyei left Munich after completing Picnic in May and did not return before his old age when he was given an award. Instead of going to France like several of his compatriots to draw inspiration for his innovative art, he withdrew to his native land and got married. The growing family, the everyday cares and the uninspiring village environment at Jernye (today: Jarovnice, Slovakia) prevented him from profound artistic absorption. In 1878, however, the boldness of his youthful paintings gushed forth again: his optimistic mood is proven by one of his most original themes, the Balloon. Szinyei was intrigued by technical innovations ― during his academic years he tried to construct an airplane ― so his brother-in-law’s balloon trip immediately electrified him. He would have gladly joined him, for a man flying high need not be interested in the trifling affairs of his fellowmen swarming down on the ground. That is how the floating airship overcoming the force of gravity became the symbol of the flight of human thought and artistic freedom. | Anna Szinyei Merse
