This is the first chance in Hungary to see a comprehensive overview of Gerhard Richter’s rich life’s work, presenting almost eighty artworks that span from the iconic photo-paintings of the 1960s, through his colouristic abstract works, to the most recent, intimate pencil drawings made since the “end” of his painted oeuvre. This varied and infinitely complex body of work compels us to provide a broad review of the main turning points in Richter’s career, and in the light of this to rethink our ideas about modern painting in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and about the creation of images in general. In the accompanying photographic exhibition, Gerhard Richter Photographed by Benjamin Katz. Portraits from the Gerhard Richter Archive in Dresden, we can take a look into the background of his art and capture momentary glimpses of the personality behind the works and the world inside his studio, through the unparalleled pictures of the celebrated photographer Benjamin Katz. Truth in Semblance is the fourth episode in the series of exhibitions entitled Classical Contemporary German Art, held at the Museum of Fine Arts – Hungarian National Gallery since 2012.
