Matisse’s oeuvre could well be described as a series of renewals, as the exhibition The Colour of Ideas, amply shows. The exhibition offers glimpses into all the phases of Matisse’s oeuvre, beginning with his early works and his Fauve period and then moving on to the increasingly reduced paintings of the 1910s, including major compositions, such as Interior, Goldfish Bowl (1914) and French Window at Collioure (1914). One section of the exhibition is exclusively devoted to Matisse’s extremely rich sculptural activity and the interiors he painted in Nice. As a highlight of the exhibition, visitors will find designs for the monumental stained-glass windows of the Rosary Chapel in Vence and a selection of Matisse’s late gouache paper cut-outs.
It is a great pleasure for us to present for the first time in Hungary a selection of works by Henri Matisse, which offers a broad overview of the French artist’s oeuvre. Matisse unquestionably had a significant influence on many Hungarian artists, and his series of prints (which are on display in this exhibition) was purchased very early on by the Museum of Fine Arts Budapest, in 1913. Yet there has never been a solo exhibition in Hungary on his whole oeuvre.
