Master MS and His Age

 "The figure of Master Ms is shrouded in myth and legend, and there have been many attempts to decode his identity. His well-known paintings, including the Visitation – which is considered the most beautiful panel painting of the Hungarian Renaissance and is in the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery – as well as the Passion paintings displayed at the Christian Museum appear in textbooks, art history publications, on the covers of literary works, in feature films, on illustrated calendars, and on stamps.

We are dedicating an exhibition to a painter whose oeuvre cannot be reconstructed in the same way as those of later masters with well-documented careers. the names of painters, sculptors, and architects from the territory of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary are mostly unknown, and we have very few written sources about them. As such, the history of art in Hungary during that time must be pieced together like a puzzle, from minuscule fragments. The pieces of the puzzle have now been successfully fitted together into a more readable whole: the research preceding this exhibition incorporated several works previously not associated with Master Ms into his oeuvre, placing the artist in a broader european context and with a different directional emphasis. His place is now more clearly defined within the orbit of Albrecht Dürer, Hans von Kulmbach, and Lucas Cranach."
