"Last year marked the 140th anniversary of the birth of Sándor Galimberti. It was a timely reminder to take a fresh look at the works of this wrongly neglected and even now barely known artist, whose superlative oeuvre was in fact created jointly with his second wife and inseparable partner, Valéria Dénes, a woman who equalled her husband as a painter and was at times bolder than him in terms of artistic innovation. In the years leading up to World War I, the Galimbertis were, without exaggeration, the most radical and unfettered artist couple in Hungarian painting. Having freed themselves from all conventions and social constraints, they were able to uphold their independence from the various artist groupings.
