While Peter Schlemihl, the fictional character by Adelbert von Chamisso (1781–1838), who lost his shadow, is internationally popular; the name of Anton Khünel (1673–1754), the alchemist who discovered his shadow, is less familiar. After long years of futile experiments in gold making, Khünel decided to give up alchemy, finding or realising that gold was already in his hands developed the amazing art of Shadowgraphy. Our small volume, with helpful instructions by Carl Willmann from 1916 and inspiring new drawings by András Felvidéki, is intended to rediscover this magic world, where shadow images can be created, to the amusement of the audience, simply by using your hands.
