This book focuses on the untold stories of women who were pioneers in a variety of fields, aiming to broaden the research into women in the National Portrait Gallery, London’s collection as part of an ongoing project in partnership with Chanel. Although the successes and achievements of many of these women have not been celebrated historically, this new publication shines a light on their stories, achievements and contributions to history and culture both in Britain and internationally.
Inspirational Women features an introductory essay on the selection of sitters in the book, as well as extended captions throughout exploring the stories behind their achievements. It covers key themes and moments in history, showcasing both the famous and less well-known women in fields including the arts, science and technology, social reform and politics. Some of the sitters include Mary Beale, Gwen John, Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Dorothy Hodgkin, Olive Morris and Laura Knight.
